Design Notes: The first Sambil Mall was built in 1998 in Caracas, Venezuela using cement terrazzo for its decorative floors in the corridors and walking areas. The Sambil group continued to use that flooring system in seven additional malls they constructed leading up to the construction of the Santo Domingo Mall. In 2010 they began construction on the Sambil Mall Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, the biggest Mall of the Caribbean. With this new project they wanted higher design with brighter colors. Unfortunately with the limitations of cement terrazzo they were not able to achieve some of the bright colors the architect wanted to include. So they made the decision to switch to epoxy terrazzo for the common areas and aisles.
While researching for an experienced epoxy terrazzo contractor they located Garcia Smester, who had previously been successful on two large epoxy terrazzo projects for commercial centers in the Dominican Republic. The architect was very comfortable with Garcia Smester’s installation history and assigned this Sambil Mall project to them. Upon completion the owners & architects were extremely satisfied with the transition to epoxy terrazzo and their new mall which continues to be the center piece of the Caribbean.
